On June 17, 2006, a 10-digit dialing system will be
implemented in several regions across Ontario and Quebec. As of
this date, you will be required to dial the area code followed by the
7-digit telephone number for all local calls. Please refer to the map
below to find out if your region is affected.

In conjunction with the new dialing system,
two new area codes will be implemented in
October 2006: 226 in Ontario’s 519 Region and 438 in Quebec’s 514 region.
Only new numbers will be affected by the new area code; all existing
numbers will remain the same.
Why 10-digit Dialing?
The recent demand for
new telephone numbers has increased dramatically due to wireless
communications devices and Internet services. With the growing
demand, the numbers available under the current area codes will run
out. The new dialing system allows for new area codes to be
implemented, which in turn will create several million possible new
phone numbers.
How does this affect you?
In the long run,
10-digit dialing should have very little effect on you. However,
for both business and residential, there are several
factors to consider in preparation for the new dialing system:
Dial the area code:
The most obvious concern is that
you will
actually have to remember to dial the area
code with all local calls. But don’t worry;
from June to October, all 7-digit calls will still be connected.
If you forget, however, you will have to listen to an automated message reminding
you to use 10-digit dialing. In October these
calls will no longer be connected.
NOTE: The
automated message will interfere with data transmission, such as faxes
and Internet.
Reprogram
telecommunications functions, systems, and equipment:
Perhaps the most important factor to consider is
reprogramming
telecommunications functions, systems, and equipment to accommodate
the new dialing system .
This includes speed-dial lists, telephone options and functions (e.g.
call forwarding), fax machines, modems and Internet connections,
security systems, auto-dial systems, and databases. These are just
some of the things that should be updated to include the area code.
For a complete list, visit
www.dial10.ca. If you are unsure if
all of your equipment is outfitted for 10-digit dialing, contact
your service providers.
Notify contact people about the change:
You must also remember to notify contact people about the change.
Make sure everyone knows your 10-digit number and you know their's: your employees,
customers, partners, suppliers etc. This will be
particularly
important when the new area codes are implemented in October.
Update everything with your contact information
on it: Make
sure that everything with your contact information on it has your 10-digit number.
This includes all of your
administrative and marketing documents, such as brochures,
stationary, invoices, and company signs.
By taking
a little time to prepare for the new 10-digit dialing system, you can
ensure that it will be a smooth transition for you and your business.

Beat the
Deadline: Reformat Your Cheques Now
In January 2008, a new Cheque Imaging process will
be implemented in Canada. Cheques will be filled out and deposited the
same way, but the clearing process will differ. An image of the
cheque will be transferred to the 'drawee' institution, rather than the
physical cheque itself.
To prepare for the new system, cheques have to be
standardized. Businesses have until June 30, 2007 to make the
changes. Note that the deadline has been changed from December
2006 so that you have adequate time to make the changes.
To prepare your business for cheque imaging, first reorder your cheques. When you receive the new cheques,
verify whether or not any of the information on your Peartree software
needs to be altered. You can do this by reprinting a small hold file of
cheques on the new forms. Also, you will need to see if the date is in
the same format indicated on the cheque form.
If any software changes are required, please send
us one of your new cheque forms, or the template provided by your
printing company, and we can quote the changes for you. We are able to
install the cheque software changes on your test database at any time,
then implement the changes on your live account when you start using the
new cheques.
As with any software change, the earlier the
better!
For more information on the new cheque
specifications, go to www.cdnpay.ca.
